Who amongst us does not feel the Christmas cheer until we watch along as Jess hears the dreaded words, “The calls are coming from the house!” This latest holiday season marked the 50th anniversary of Black Christmas, a beloved slasher that has endured over the years. In the latest issue of FANGORIA magazine, I take a look at the legacy of Bob Clark’s perhaps accidental feminist masterpiece and interrogate whether the film’s two remakes live up to that legacy.

“There is a carefully crafted subtlety to the casual misogyny written into this film’s characters. But with all iconic horrors, new filmmakers seek to put their stamp on the films that influenced them, further imbuing these new versions with the meanings that they took away from the film. Like a game of telephone, each rendition makes more apparent certain aspects that existed within the original and secondary details come to the forefront. Although Black Christmas never got a slew of sequels, it does have two extremely distinct remakes from two different eras in horror history. This turns each Black Christmas film into a unique time capsule showcasing which horrors of the time were to be exploited and infused into a festive slasher. “
