August Recap

Hello, sirens!

I think in my quest to make more of this site, I think we should try something a little different: Monthly Recaps!

Although I try to make a post with each new review, editorial, and podcast episode/guest spot (regardless of the outlet), I think recapping what happened each month on Siren Death Cult could be fun. I’m hoping this can serve not just as a reference for things that have already been given their own previous posts, but also as an outlet for any other lingering thoughts that I carried through a given month. This could include some first time watches that I’d love to highlight (whether they’re somewhat recent releases that I didn’t already review or they’re older films that are simply “new to me”), recent discourse, or any other film-related fixations.

Now, with that laid out—let’s recap August!

August has been an exciting month for me. Not just because I have already deemed it appropriate to start Halloween festivities, but because I joined the ranks of both MovieJawn and Offscreen Central as a staff writer! If you have been keeping up with this blog, then you’ve seen the reviews I’ve been posting—including some remote coverage of my first film festival, Popcorn Frights 2024. This means that much of my August watches have been revolving around my new writing assignments.

Other recent watches:

Aside from these films that I reviewed, I also took some personal trips to my local cinemas. M. Night Shyamalan is back with the psychological thriller, Trap. I think it is always exciting to see what Shyamalan does next, even if they are not always a hit for me. I have always been a huge fan of certain films of his like The Village and even The Visit (and all its flaws). I don’t have much to say about Trap other than this was a fun one and if you didn’t catch it, do yourself a huge favor and get on it once it hits VOD/streaming.

If you follow me on Letterboxd, then you know I have watched so much more than what I am mentioning in this recap but much of those are tied to upcoming reviews or other projects that I have yet to officially announce…so keep those eyes peeled… and follow me on Letterboxd!!

Rotten FM:

This month started with a small hiatus for Rotten FM. If you know me, you know I am a dancer and I had performances at the beginning of August, complicating our recording schedule. However, this month we did put out episodes on Love Lies Bleeding and The Crow (1994).

This podcast has been such a journey, and we are grateful for any of you who take time out of your day to listen to us. We’re moving into my favorite time of the year, so stay tuned for what is coming next to Rotten FM.

Coming soon…

As we welcome September, I am counting down the days until Fantastic Fest 2024, my first official film festival!! I will be attending the entire festival in person, and will get to meet all of the friends and role models that I have made since I started my writing journey. Plenty of my reviews from Fantastic Fest will be coming to Offscreen Central as well as Siren Death Cult, and you may even hear some thoughts from Reyna and I on Rotten FM. This Halloween season is going to be an exciting one and I am keen to share it with you all.

Amidst all of these reviews, I also have some editorials coming your way! But to read those, please make sure you preorder MovieJawn Vol. 10 Issue #3: Fall 2024 and subscribe to Fangoria Magazine in time to receive Vol. 2 Issue #25: October 2024…more specific details about my pieces will be coming soon I promise!

Now, that’s all for August! Moving forward, I’ll try to hone in on what I want to accomplish with these monthly recaps and make them a little more exciting. But we’re trying something new so be sure to let me know what else you want to see on Siren Death Cult.

xx
